Dualtone Recording Artist Carey Ott / Update - May 2007

Carey Ott's Basement Show Reminds Me Why I live in Nashville

With a voice reminiscent of Neil Finn and acoustic guitar skills comparable to Paul Simon, Carey Ott's under-attended Basement performance Friday night was a fresh reminder of why I live in this town—because I can sit comfortably in a room that is half-full and enjoy a set by a musician who should be on the cover of Rolling Stone.

Ott is a Chicago transplant signed to Dualtone Records whose songs have been featured on Grey's Anatomy. With shades of Crowded House and The Beatles, Ott relies heavily on his warm vocals, which are immediately pleasing to the ear. The songs are tightly crafted melodic treats for anyone who happens to be listening. Onstage, Carey Ott's presence and delivery are so relaxed and non-anxious (it was the same at the Americana Folk Fest), that he creates a warm and friendly "living-room" atmosphere while simultaneously giving every song the energy it deserves.

As Crowded House prepares to release one more record followed by a world tour, I can only hope that someone at Dualtone records can land Carey Ott an opening slot for a portion of the tour. As much as I enjoy comfortably watching amazing talent in a half-full Nashville bar, I'd much rather see Carey Ott receiving the national attention that he deserves and, consequently, selling out the Ryman Auditorium.

Dualtone Recording Artist Carey Ott / Update - April 11, 2007

Damn if it ain't true! Carey's lead off track on Lucid Dream, "Am I Just One," has been given the nod by the creative forces of "Grey's Anatomy" to make yet another appearance on the hit ABC Television series. This will be the songs third performance since January 22, 2006. Check it out this Thursday, April 12/07.

On top of that,
"I Wouldn't Do That To You" has been chosen to be included on the Myspace Records soundtrack of another ABC TV series, Kyle XY.

Carey's
"Lucid Dream," the Dualtone Records cd release seems to be catching on as spawning ground for television music supervisors. Can a feature Movie appearance be close at hand?

Great news on the coat tails of Carey's three week Colorado / Utah / California solo acoustic tour which he has just wrapped up! The last two dates saw Carey as a duo with San Jose based drum aficionado, Terry Carleton. They truly rocked the Sweetwater in Mill Valley! The all ages show in San Jose at the Graeme Mathew Studio was over the top!

Carey's back in Nashville where his next gig is with
Tyrone Wells and Leigh Nash at the Mercy Lounge, Thursday, April 19.

The journey continues with optimism and clarity. It is clear that Carey is reaching a growing number of true music fans who are continuously looking for a bright light to inspire.

Grey's Anatomy by clicking here. If you haven't tapped into Carey's recent video interview piece please do so here.

It probably was inevitable that Ottawa natives and Nashville, Tenn., singer-songwriters Carey Ott and Chris Gelbuda would become friends. "I used to play Little League in Ottawa with (Chris') big brother Billy," Ott said in an email interview. "I had heard about Chris, that he was writing songs, and then he came to Nashville and emailed me about writing sometime. I responded to his email and we've been writing buddies ever since. He's like a brother." The writing partnership just went to another level, since Ott and Gelbuda have written a song...
Muddy Water by Nashville-based singer/songwriter Carey Ott is an accomplished, exceptional collection of tunes. It's obvious Ott has learned from the best: John Hiatt, John Prine, probably a few other Johns and maybe a Bob or two. If you like strong songwriting shot through with warmth and humanity, and records where every track offers something different from the one previous while keeping true to the strengths of melody and feel, you'll LOVE Muddy Water.
